Date of Entry: The 28th of December 2010
Person present to preform and record: Shannon Cattie
Environmental conditions of room or area of experimentation: my kitchen, room temperature
Qualitative data during experiment: Control: · 0 minutes (0 sec) o In the first few seconds, a drop off immediately began to form. This kept forming throughout the five minutes. · 5 minutes (300 sec) o The drop is still continuing to form. · 10 minutes (600 sec) o Some sand has begun to float on the surface of the water and on the tub above the water. The water has soaked through all of the sand and dampened it by this point. The board has also caught a bit of sand from the water. · 15 minutes (900 sec) o The sand is continuing to collect on the board and sides of the tube. The sand has scattered across the floor of the “beach.” · 20 minutes (1200 sec) o The above sand movement has stayed the same and continued on the same course as it did at the 15 minute mark. · 25 minutes (1500 sec) o The sand has continued to form along the side and bottom of the tub along with the board. It is continuing with how it has formed before. · 30 minutes (1800 sec) o A lot of sand is on the board now and the water is very murky. The lay out of the sand has many curves and hills.
Jetty 1:
0 minutes (0 sec)
I have placed the sand, water, and rocks into the tub. The jetty is 41 cm long and 13 cm from the shoreline.
5 minutes (300 sec)
The sand had a “hollow” spot behind the jetty, like quick sand. I discovered this by placing the ruler into the sand to evaluate the slope. The slope is steady, there is no drop off. The sand has made a dent that makes a curve from the jetty to the outer tub.
10 minutes (600 sec)
The process is continuing from the 5 minute mark.
15 minutes (900 sec)
The sand has formed on the sides of the tub.
20 minutes (1200 sec)
The bulge of the left side has spread. The drop of each side has become more ridged. The sand has traveled out to the opposite sides of the jetty.
25 minutes (1500 sec)
The process from the 20 minute mark has continued.
30 minutes (1800 sec)
Holes have formed around the rocks. More are seen on the left side than the right.
Jetty 2:
0 minutes (0 sec)
The jetty is a total of 44 cm long and 15 cm is immersed in the water.
5 minutes (300 sec)
The water has created a “U-like” shape on shore which has made a small drop off.
10 minutes (600 sec)
The drop off has kept forming, not deeper, but more defined.
15 minutes (900 sec)
Holes have formed around the edge of the rocks on both sides. The on-shore drop off has become very defined.
20 minutes (1200 sec)
The on-shore drop off has kept following the path it has been taking.
25 minutes (1500 sec)
The process is continuing as before.
30 minutes (1800 sec)
The on-shore drop off has been defined. The holes around the rocks are very noticeable.
